At a remote truck stop diner, two elderly sisters play out a deliciously twisted game in a bloody attempt to silence the ghosts of their past.
This darkly comedic thriller stars Colette Mann, Wendy Hughes and Stephen Leeder. Collette received a Best Actress Award at Young At Heart Film Festival for her role as Frances.
The film was funded by Film Victoria, Velvet films and Thirdrow films, and was written by Gillian Bartlett, produced by Donna Lyon for Velvet Films and directed by Nigel Karikari. Just Desserts has screened widely at international festivals including Interfilm Berlin, Rhode Island, Hollyshorts, Flickerfest and was selected as the supporting short for Bruce Beresford’s epic biopic ‘Mao’s Last Dancer’ at the 2011 London Australian Film Festival.
I tend to enjoy stories which take a few risks particularly with genre or have a dark, and different view on the world. As a lover of noir and very dark comedies Gillian’s script really grabbed me. It touched on classic noir tropes like the femme fatale, (here times two), the false twist and the morally ambivalent ending but wrapped it all up in a dark little bundle of deliciously twisted role-playing and an unexpected and moving back story.
