NIGEL KARIKARI

DIRECTING / CINEMATOGRAPHY / EDITING

Hi! I'm a filmmaker based in Melbourne Australia,

shooting, directing, writing and editing for TV, online TVCs,

short and long form narrative and documentary projects.

British by birth, Ghanaian by heritage and Australian by adoption,  I studied architecture in London before getting my start on set, running on music videos. I then headed into post-production working in Soho at The Film Editors as assistant editor to Pamela Power, Ridley and Tony Scott’s commercials editor.

After becoming an editor and cutting TVC campaigns for brands ranging from Coca- Cola to Adidas I moved into making music videos as well as writing short films on the side. My first completed short screenplay won the BAFTA Focus On Talent Screenwriting award. Following this I was asked to write a radio play for BBC Radio 4.

Shortly after, I met my wife and moved to Australia where for three years I edited TV commercials at leading Melbourne post-production company Digital Pictures.

I currently shoot and direct as a freelancer  and  through my production company Thirdrow Films.

I've won two Melbourne Design Awards Gold Medals for video campaigns and an AWGIE (Australian Writers Guild Award) for my short screenplay LOVE HURTS. My first completed feature script IN THE BLOOD was green-lit for production by Screen Australia.

I’m also in the Guinness Book of Records.

OTHER STUFF

Apart from my love of motorbikes...

...I'm also a world record holder! As one of fifty screenwriters who contributed to the portmanteau feature film 50 Kisses. A crazy but brilliant competition where people voted online for the best short scripts which were then uploaded for anyone to direct. My script Neil was the most chosen project and went on to be made into eight different versions! Such a great learning opportunity! One version was eventually chosen to be included in the final feature, comprised of films of all fifty short scripts.

In my music video editing days I was lucky enough to cut Banksy's only known music video (yes I know what he looks like!). I remember as I attended the online at MPC London (who were doing us a great deal in overnight downtime) he would sneak off to work on one of his artworks on a wall downstairs. The management went ballistic when they walked in the next day to find someone had "graffittied" the wall! They actually moved a photocopier in front of it until the "youngsters" clued them in.
